Windy Wedding Hair and Makeup in Cape Town: How to Keep Your Look Together
For a windy wedding in Cape Town, choose a secure hairstyle, have your veil pinned properly and plan your makeup to stay put. Do those and a gust will not undo your morning.
The south-easter, often called the Cape Doctor, blows mostly in summer, which is wedding season for many couples. Here is how I plan for it.
Which bridal hairstyles hold up best in the wind?
| Style | In the wind |
|---|---|
| Low updo | Sits close to the head and is usually the most secure |
| Braided updo | The braiding adds hold, and pins keep it in place |
| Half-up | Holds well when pinned securely, and the lower half will move |
| Loose waves | Moves the most, so plan a quick fix between photos |
Your hair type matters as much as the style. Fine hair and thick hair behave differently, and a trial shows us what holds for you.

How to keep your veil in place
- Bring your veil to the trial, so we can pin it into your actual hairstyle.
- Tell me how long you plan to wear it. Many brides take it off after the ceremony photos, and it helps to know before I style.
- Ask a bridesmaid to watch me pin it, so she can fix it on the day.
- Hold the edge of a long veil in a gust, so it does not pull on your hair.
Windy day makeup that lasts
Wind makes eyes water, and wedding days bring happy tears too. Waterproof mascara is a good idea, and I'm happy to talk through lashes when we plan your look.
I finish with a combination of the Smink Setting Spray and the Revlon Setting Spray. Keep a small touch-up kit nearby too. Mine includes a lipstick, a lipstick applicator and a powder puff with a bit of powder on it. For the full routine, read how to make your wedding makeup last all day.

Planning your photos in the wind
- Tell your photographer that wind is likely, and ask for a sheltered spot between outdoor shots.
- Check the forecast a few days ahead on the South African Weather Service, and again the evening before.
- Ask your venue about an indoor backup for the ceremony or portraits.
Questions brides ask
Will wind ruin my wedding hair?
Not if the style is chosen for it. A secure style, pinned well, handles a windy day. We test it at your trial, and the same goes for how it feels after a few hours.
Should I choose a different style for an outdoor wedding?
Tell me your venue when we plan your look. If it is open and exposed, I'd lean toward a more secure style. If you love loose waves, we can plan around them. See also summer and winter wedding hair and makeup in Cape Town.
