How to Make Your Wedding Makeup Last All Day in Cape Town's Wind and Heat

A Cape Town wedding can mean sun, a strong wind, a coastal breeze, or all three in one afternoon. Add happy tears, hugs and dancing, and your makeup has a lot to get through.

Here is how I help your makeup stay beautiful from the first photo to the last dance.

It starts with your skin

Makeup lasts best on well-prepared skin. Soft, hydrated skin holds makeup better than dry or flaky skin. Start a simple skincare routine a few months ahead, and see 4 Beauty Tips For Brides for more.

On the day, arrive with a clean face and no products on your skin, so we can start from scratch.

Build the look to last

I build your makeup in thin layers, so it sits on your skin and doesn't feel heavy. Light layers are more comfortable all day, and they tend to wear better than one thick layer.

I add powder only where it's needed, such as the forehead, nose and chin, so your skin keeps a soft, healthy look. There is more on this in Wedding Makeup for Photos.

Lock it in with setting spray

The final step is setting spray. I use a combination of the Smink Setting Spray and the Revlon Setting Spray, to help keep your makeup in place through the photos, the dancing and a long day.

Plan for wind and heat

  • Cape Town wind: a secure hairstyle, with a veil pinned in properly, keeps your hair in place when the wind picks up.
  • Heat: stay in the shade between photos, and keep water close by.
  • Tears of joy: waterproof mascara is a good idea. I'm happy to talk through the lashes and eyes when we plan your look.
  • Lips: a colour that you can top up easily is a good choice for a long day, and your touch-up kit has a lipstick for this.

A small touch-up kit

You get a small touch-up kit to keep with you. It has a lipstick, a lipstick applicator and a powder puff with a bit of powder on it.

Ask a bridesmaid to carry it for you, so you can freshen up quickly and get back to your day.

Do a trial

A trial lets you see how your makeup and hair hold up. Wear it for a few hours, take a few photos, and tell me what you notice. Read more in Get Ready for Your Bridal Hair & Makeup Trial.

Let's plan your look

If you'd like makeup that lasts all day, get in touch with your date and venue, and I'll let you know about availability.
