Your Wedding Morning Timeline: Who Goes First and How Long Hair & Makeup Takes
The morning of your wedding goes by quickly, and hair and makeup is one of the biggest parts of it. A simple plan means everyone is ready on time, and you can enjoy the morning instead of watching the clock.
Here is how I think about planning it, so you know what to expect.
Start with your ceremony time
Work backwards. Start from the time you need to be dressed and ready for photos or the ceremony, then add a buffer. I always suggest finishing a little early, so there is room for photos, a bite to eat and a few calm minutes before you leave.
How long does it take?
This depends on the look, your hair and the size of the group. As a rough guide, bridal makeup takes about an hour to an hour and a half, and bridal hair about an hour. Long hair, extensions or a detailed style can take longer, and so can false lashes.
Bridesmaids and mums are usually quicker, but it adds up with a bigger group. Tell me how many people need hair and makeup, and I'll build a schedule that fits.

Who goes first?
It is usually the person with the most to do, or the one leaving for the venue first. Many brides go first so they are never rushed. Others go in the middle, so they can enjoy the morning with their bridesmaids.
The order of hair and makeup can vary too. We'll decide what works best for your look and the venue, and I'll plan the rest around it.
Make the morning easier
- Arrive with clean, dry hair and a clean face, with no products on your skin or in your hair.
- Wear a button-up or loose top, so you don't pull anything over your finished hair and makeup.
- Choose a spot with good natural light and a power socket.
- Have water and a small snack ready, because it's a long morning.
- Keep the dress, shoes and jewellery nearby, so you can get dressed straight after.
Plan for the unexpected
Traffic, a late arrival or a last-minute change can happen. A realistic buffer is the best way to keep the morning relaxed. If you aren't sure how long your look will take, a trial gives us a good idea. Read more in Get Ready for Your Bridal Hair & Makeup Trial.
